Iron Mountain Hike--Saturday July 8

We will be following a new route on this beautiful hike.

In the past, we have set up a shuttle, which meant a lot of slow driving along gravel roads (twice).  Because the view from the road is beautiful, we'll hike the shuttle route, providing more hike time.

On the hike we travel along the eastern border of the Iron Mtn Botanical Area and up to the site of an old look out tower at 4047 feet with unobstructed views in every direction including 16 miles out to the ocean.  Tan Oak, California Coffee Berry, Sadler Oak, Huckleberry Oak and Red Huckleberry make up much of the under story.  We will stop on the road up to view seeping springs full of Darlingtonia .

NOTE:  People wanting a shorter hike can return from the tower to the parking area.

This is a difficult rocky trail, so walking sticks and boots with good ankle support are highly recommended.

Bring plenty of water, lunch and dress appropriately for both heat and windy exposed areas.

We are traveling on gravel roads with pot holes, slumps, and some high centers.   Passenger vehicles might scrub bottom occasionally, so high clearance vehicles are recommended.
